How to deal with stress during your PhD and use it as a positive power?
Do you feel stressed and overwhelmed in your doctoral studies?
According to recent studies, PhD students suffer from the negative effects of stress 3 times more than other highly educated individuals.
“Stress” is a mental, emotional and physical state that can be perceived as a “motivating friend” encouraging you to take action and get things done, or a “paralyzing enemy”, able to compromise or even destroy all our efforts.
Stress is not “good” or “bad”; it is a continuum of perceptions that can have different effects on our mind and our body. The way stress affects us depends on our way to we are able to control and embrace it.
The aim of this meeting is to better understand the mechanism of “stress” and learn to use it in a beneficial way.
In this interactive workshop we will talk about:
– the positive & negative effects of stress
– how to identify the sources of stress in your PhD
– techniques to cope with stress and use it as a positive power!
About the presenter:
Dr. Ewa Pluciennicka is a psychologist passionate about science. She earned a PhD in cognitive psychology in 2015 and since then pursued her academic career as a post-doc at the University of Strasbourg. Recently, she founded PhD Success (https://phdsuccess.eu), an online platform supporting PhD students in their doctoral struggles, including stress.
As both a doctoral student and a postdoc, Ewa was a victim of the negative effects of stress. In fact, public speaking was the thing that paralyzed her the most. However, public speaking was an essential part of her academic experience, motivating her to look for solutions. She used her psychology background to better understand the mechanisms underlying “stress”. This understanding was the first step to better control her stress and then progressively learn to benefit from it. In this workshop, Ewa will share with you her experience and help you to gain control over your stress.
